Trip Overview

A remarkable another experiences, climbing slowly up to Zangmu same as Lhasa trip. If weather is permitting, Everest will be on view. We cross the river & travel through beautiful valleys, dotted with hamlets to Raka. Here we camp at the junction of the North & South routes. For the next 3days we travel over the great Tibetan Plateau past sparkling lakes and surrounded but endless vistas of mountains and hills. It is sparsely populated and we camp by stream as we reach the end of each day.

Crossing the Indus, we should reach Ali/Shiquan. This is the principal town for the whole are & here we rest & replenish our supplies. Turning South, we drive to Darchen (Kailash), visiting the Thirtapuri Spring and the cave of Milarepa en route. In Darchen, we prepare the trek to Circuit Mt. Kailash for camping. We begin our walk with fellow pilgrims, stopping for the night at the Dri-ra Puk monastery. The following day we cross the Dolma La at 18,600ft. camping down in the valley. The third day we complete the 32 miles back to Darchen. We now travel across the plain to Lake Mansarover where we stay two nights, visiting some of the neighboring Ghompas. If possible, we shall also visit Purung close to the border with India & Nepal.

We now return to Zhangmu via the southern route. This poorly maintained road travels the length of the Himalayas from India through of Nepal with superb views of the mountain ranges all the way. There are many valleys to be traversed, some totally isolated, some densely populated with yak herders. The area is teeming with wildlife, especially, with deer & small herds of fast moving wild as. We reach Zhangmu again to cross the border back into Nepal and tours/trek end in Kathmandu
